Mountains Prime Evil by Wade A. Stevenson
Special Agent Steve Scott, back from Europe, starts at a Defense Department investigative office in Colorado Springs and meets a violent clash with his boss.
About the book
Hoping for a new start in life after the death of his fiancee and his harrowing military experiences in Europe with OPERATION DROPHAMMER and the finding of the Hitler and Nazi WWII plunder-filled Salzdorf mine, Special Agent Steve Scott reports for civilian duty to the U.S. Department of Defense Investigative Service in Colorado Springs, Colorado, where his boss and the new agent soon discover that a violent confrontation between them is inevitable. Steve has a mentor in the upper echelons of the Pentagon who has pulled some strings to have Steve assigned to this particular situation and who plays a continuing undercover role in Steve's new assignment.
One of Scott's routine security clearance investigations involves a senior ranking US Army officer, highly decorated, and an outstanding pillar of his community who is receiving national media attention for commanding the unit constructing levees, reservoirs and dams in poverty stricken areas of Mexico. However, the officer is also a pedophile, rapist and serial murderer viscously insane, and determined at all costs to keep his perversions and drug involvement hidden. Steve's routine investigation unleashes the wrath of the Colonel and his underlings who covertly direct their considerable evil attentions to Scott and those closest to him. This vendetta compounds problems for Scott who still struggles with personal guilt over his fiancee's death. He'd volunteered for the military assignment to England and wonders if she might still be alive had he stayed in the states. Because of this guilt Scott lives with a constant fear of affection, of becoming close to someone, and then losing her as he did his first love.
Ultimately Scott meets and falls in love with a beautiful young lady who bears a remarkable resemblance to his dead fiancee. With his new assignment Scott also meets a wide range of off duty colorful characters who add humor, excitement and story twists, and fellow Special Agents who have gripping experiences of their won in which Scott somehow becomes enmeshed. A motor cycle gang, a barroom clique, a house blown up, and hunting camp all contribute to the maelstrom whirling around Scott.
The story ends with Scott discovering the identity of his nemesis, a harrowing chase and fight which ends with Scott narrowly escaping another assassination attempt, and his making imminent plans for marriage between him and his new ladylove.
