About this archive

Rollers of an old printing press

This site is an independent restoration of harrisliterary.com as it appeared between 1998 and 2009. The source is the set of snapshots held by the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine. Different pages were captured at different times, so the archive is a composite: the welcome page and the showcase date from early 2009, the submission guidelines from the same period, the Other Works page from August 2003, and individual author listings from any point in the eleven-year span. The capture date of each listing has been preserved.

The archive has no connection with the Harris Literary Agency, with Barbara J. Harris or with any author listed here. It does not represent anyone, does not accept queries or manuscripts, and does not forward correspondence. It exists because the agency's site was a dense record of what unpublished American fiction and non-fiction looked like in those years, and because that record would otherwise be scattered across hundreds of snapshot URLs.

Listings are kept as the agency published them, including its own labels, spelling and occasional typing errors. Two things were removed or left out on purpose: contact details, meaning postal addresses, telephone and fax numbers and e-mail addresses, on every page; and author portrait photographs, since most of the people listed were private individuals seeking a first contract. Where the agency ran two pages for the same book, both have been kept, because each existed at its own address on the original site.

The site can be read three ways. The card catalog lists every author with book title, label and capture year. The A to Z index sorts by surname. The genre pages group the 245 listings into eight sets using the agency's own labels. The original file names, such as /biggers.html or /submission.html, have been kept at the same paths because other websites, forums and bibliographies linked to them over the years, and those links still resolve here.

New pieces written for the archive are collected in the Agency Desk.

Questions

Where does the material come from?

From Wayback Machine captures of harrisliterary.com dated between 1998 and 2009. No material was added from the agency, from authors or from any other website; brief context on a few well-known authors is drawn from their English Wikipedia entries.

Is the archive complete?

No. It holds only what the Wayback Machine captured. Some titles named on the agency's showcase pages, such as Tranquility Base by Robert Swartz or Walls, A Metaphor by Will Lonardo, have no surviving listing page, and some author pages exist only in an early capture. Nothing missing has been reconstructed or filled in.

Can I cite or link to this archive?

Yes. The author pages keep the same file names the agency used, so an existing citation of the original address will point at the same listing here. For scholarly use, cite the Wayback Machine capture date shown on each listing as the primary source.
