Brother's Keeper by Kristie Klemme

At eight years old, Kristie Tovrea accidentally shot and killed her little brother Jimmy with their father's gun. The memoir follows years of secrecy, abuse and neglect, and her path to forgiving herself.

About the book

It took an instant for her baby brother to die, but it took half a lifetime for her to forgive herself. On a beautiful summer day in the shadows of the Rocky Mountains, Kristie Tovrea played with her beloved brother, Jimmy. He found a gun, and then the gun went off in her hands.

For years, she kept the truth a secret from her family, convinced she was unlovable and unforgivable. Finally unable to keep her secret any longer, she told the truth. Enduring abuse and neglect throughout her teenage years, Kristie retreated deeper and deeper into herself, until one day, she learned her only hope was to forgive herself.
