Inside Out by Fran Abram
An accountant in Washington DC helps an FBI agent investigate her employer's money laundering, and the trail leads to a master criminal threatening the Caribbean.
About the book
Inside Out is a story of both character and action, set in present day Washington DC and south Florida. At first blush, it is a thriller, complete with drug runners and hit men, gang members and terrorists, car chases and explosions.
On a deeper level, it tells the story of two people, very ordinary people simply doing their jobs and living their lives. Both characters must change and grow as the plot moves from one flash point to the next.
The heroine is an accountant, a young woman devoted to her employer. This man is, in may ways, her surrogate father. He has involved himself and his business in an illegal money laundering scheme. The heroine must recognize the changes that have come over this man, and when the opportunity presents itself, she must put aside her devotion to him and see that justice is done.
The hero is an FBI agent who has buried himself in his work in order to put his past behind him, a past which includes the death of a lover. He blames himself for this tragedy and vows that history will never repeat itself. However, he must open a personal relationship with the heroine and ask for her help in his investigation of her employer. He understands that this will put her at risk, and he must balance his growing attraction to her with the necessities of the investigation.
Ultimately these two people fall in love. Working together, they uncover a plot that runs deeper than either ever imagined. The money laundering scheme which opened the investigation is merely the tip of the iceberg. Beneath it all, a master criminal sits, pulling strings, manipulating lives, and threatening the political stability of the entire Caribbean.
In the end, of course, both justice and love triumph. The hero and heroine accept the changes that have altered and look to a bright new future together.
