About the book
A spontaneous mutation occurring twelve thousand years ago creates a new species of Man. Mutant individuals, possessed of superior strength and intellect, are distinguished by their eyes: stunningly green with no whites. Throughout the centuries, children born to parents carrying the genes are thought to be demons and are killed at birth. In 1436, the leaders of great nations and religions form the Venice Protectorate, a clandestine organization that hunts and kills mutant babies at birth.
Dr. Jane Becker, a brilliant young geneticist, learns of the existence of the mutants from Carl Yllom, an elderly survivor of the Nazi death camps where he befriended a mutant child. Jane discovers evidence of numerous mutant births and the subsequent death of all the babies. She tries to learn more from Yllom but he is murdered by the Protectorate.
Jane is summoned by the Old One, a Sioux Indian who is a hybrid mutant. He has lived for over one hundred years hidden from the Protectorate on reservations in the West. Convinced of the existence of the mutants, Jane finds pure mutant DNA in the mummified remains of an ancient Egyptian prince. Jane replicates the DNA at a high-tech bioengineering company owned by her boyfriend and inserts it into carrier viruses for experimental tests.
The Protectorate attacks the Old One's refuge deep in the South Dakota hills and, failing to kill him, turns its attention to Jane. Protectorate agents kill Jane's boyfriend when they firebomb the bio-tech labs. They seek to kill Jane as well to destroy her research. Before they can reach her, Jane releases the viruses carrying mutant DNA.
Hundreds of people are genetically altered by the virus and mutant children begin to be born. The flood is unstoppable and the mutants survive to ultimately dominate the world.
