Old Stones by Richard Howe

Three longtime friends raft the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon: a Seattle defense attorney in a bitter divorce, a short-tempered teacher and a physician. A series of accidents tests the trip.

About the book

Old Stones deals with the experiences of three long-time friends on a rafting trip down the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon. Charlie Franklin, a Seattle public defense attorney, is being tormented by a bitter divorce. He sees the trip as a mystical experience, a welcome opportunity to cleanse his spirit. Bill Wilcox, a disgruntled public school teacher with a fierce temper and poor impulse control, struggles with his own demons, employing skills as a clown and practical joker to keep the others off guard. The third member of the trio, John Reynolds, a physician is forced to deal with a series of accidents, rekindling his love of medicine along the way. They are joined by Bill and John's inseparable teenaged daughters as well as a diverse group of passengers and crew members all replete with their unique foibles and idiosyncrasies. The dramatic highlight is Charlie's near drowning in Crystal Rapid. In the aftermath of the trip, an outbreak of the rare Sin Nombre virus claims half the party including Charlie who lingers near death in intensive care.
