Oocyte by Russo

Three college friends survive a violent night, and years later one of them, a fertility specialist, faces a choice about cloning for her friend's baby.

About the book

It was supposed to be a night of fun and excitement for Megan McGrath, Deb Scalia and Suzanne Coughlin, three college friends celebrating Megan's early admission to medical school. Megan and Deb were raped that night, while Suzanne watched in horror. They all recovered, remained the best of friends, but not without each being effected physically and emotionally.
Megan went on to become a world renowned expert in in-vitro fertilization, but that night left her so physically damaged that she would never be able to carry her own child. The emotional trauma to Deb left her with scars that prevented her from having an intimate relationship with her husband. By the time Deb, and her husband Joe Scalia, were ready for children, Deb's eggs were too fragile for conception. The only solution was cloning.
Dr. Megan McGrath performed the cloning of her best friend Deb, but was investigated. There was enough evidence to warrant her arrest, and she was brought to trial.
During the trial, it was revealed that Deb Scalia was pregnant with twins. Deb, and her husband Joe, decided to give one of their children to Megan and her husband Tony.
Megan was found guilty and sentenced to two years in maximum security prison. While in prison, she learned that her own eggs, harvested when she was a young intern, were used for Deb's cloning, and that they were infected with a rare virus. Deb's daughter develops leukemia as a result of the virus, and, in a dramatic and surprising ending, Megan and Tony give their daughter back to her natural parents.
