About the book
Murder brings terror to the tiny town of Pine Ridge, Washington. Amy, the murder victim is one of the girls returning for the class reunion. The sheriff realizes, at the scene of the murder, this is a death so hideous, it must be solved quickly for the peace of mind of all the people in his county. He knows his old high school buddy, Dain Darlow, a trained Los Angeles Homicide Detective, returning home for the reunion, is just the person he needs to make sure this crime will come to a successful conclusion, so he enlists his help.
Dain and the sheriff were both members of the class of 1980, the last class to graduate from the old high school. They were two of only eleven students in the class, seven boys and four girls. The four girls, Sheila, Pat, Amy, and Beverly, bear the blame for a tragic accident, which took the life of the mother of the only Indian boy in the class, Luther Light-Under-Deer, nick-named, "Lud" by his classmates.
Lud, now the sheriff, suddenly begins to have headaches and black outs. Consulting a doctor he is stunned to discover he has an inoperable brain tumor. He is unaware Chief Looking Glass, a direct ancestor of long years ago, is taking over during his fugues. Lud is long past blaming his mother's death on the girls. But the chief's personality, brought on by the stress of the brain tumor, is brooding about his mother's death and the treatment received at the hands of the whites. Unbeknownst to Lud and Dain, the chief is the monster they are trying to apprehend.
Dain discovers the chief's existence and tracks him to his cabin in the forest. Looking Glass, the consummate warrior, now in control of Lud's mind, knows Dain is coming. With the deadly compound bow in his hand, he awaits Dain's emergence. The deranged man's black piercing eyes following Dain's movement slowly raises his bow.
Sheila, Dain's high school sweetheart, who is hiding in Lud's lighted dwelling, sees the chief's movement in the dim edge of the illumination cast from the cabin's big picture window. As he begins to draw the bow string taut, Sheila, afraid for Dain's life, and shaking with fear, points the revolver she found in the cabin and pulls the trigger again and again. With the gun, now empty, still in her hand, she sees Looking Glass' body lying in a pool of blood and knows the nightmare is finally over.
