Unborn Soul by Mike Carter

Attorney Paul Blythe, close to making partner, takes a hospital's case to remove an incompetent physician after a young nurse is left in a coma. The case pulls him into a fierce fight for control of a regional medical center.

About the book

Paul Blythe graduated from a prestigious law school then landed his first job with the city's biggest law firm, but not without concealing his past and suppressing his true personality. Now, as he is on the verge of making partner, he takes a case that could make his career and assure his future. Dr. Brazel, an incompetent physician, commits malpractice. Claire--a beautiful, young nurse who had once been a Nun but left the Church--lay in a coma. As part of a confidential process mandated by law, Paul's client, St. John's Hospital, must follow a complicated legal process and provide the physician with a hearing before it can terminate him from the medical staff. In prosecuting the case, Paul becomes involved in a fierce, political struggle for control of a large, regional medical center. He is well in control of the case. A victory will ensure that the hospital's CEO, Sister Catherine, will refer all future business--a huge stream of income--to Paul's firm and his managing partner, Wesley Pierce.

Then Claire awakes from her coma and recounts a religious vision. Some believe it is a miracle. The medical evidence is inconclusive. This development threatens to derail the case, which could cost his firm the client and seriously damage Paul's career. More importantly, Paul's growing obsession with Claire threatens to unravel the psychological foundation on which he has built his new life, as well as his mental and emotional stability, as it ignites not only his passions but his deep-seated and long-suppressed spirituality.

As Paul feared, Claire is destroyed on cross-examination and the hearing becomes a fiasco. Afterwards, he and Claire share a brief moment of emotional intimacy. Devastated by the loss and confused by his feelings for Claire, he embarks on a deadly drive. Does she have religious visions or psychotic delusions? As he sinks deeper, does Paul experience a spiritual epiphany or simply the end-result of his growing addiction and mental disease process?
